Position Summary
This Senior Interior Designer (Sr.ID) on the Business Environments and Hospitality Team (BEHT) is responsible for working with clients to develop experience design solutions that meet their clients’ needs and are consistent with the firm's purpose, “To enrich life through artful design.”  The Sr.ID will play a lead role in attracting new clients to the firm, developing design concepts and collaborating with others to deliver solutions consistent with the client organization’s culture, goals and budget.  He/she will be able to speak the language(s) of different client types in a meaningful and insightful manner and will work to integrate interior, architectural and graphic design into a cohesive solution.  It is expected this individual will work to elevate the design capabilities of the entire firm and be a strong mentor of our interior design talent.  This is a leadership position and the Sr.ID will be expected to be a strong team player working with senior managers, architectural designers, graphic designers, marketing staff, and intellectual partners.  Strong collaboration and communication skills are a must.  Recognized experience as a thought leader in a market segment is considered a plus.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as senior interior designer on projects helping teams to articulate a strong conceptual framework as the basis for design.  Accepts the additional challenge of serving as design resource for the firm as a whole.
  • Cooperatively between the BEHT and Client Services team, develops, implements and supports the marketing of the firm in general, and the specific marketing efforts of the BEHT.  These strategies will build upon his/her personal client contacts and their ability to attract clients, driving revenue to the team.
  • Develops and implements marketing strategies to continue to position Kahler Slater as a growing, high quality, high design firm of thought leaders.
  • Acts as a representative of Kahler Slater within the business and design community; and is confident and comfortable in this role.
  • Serves as a primary coach and mentor to other staff, especially junior designers, on the BEHT.  Serves as a design resource and mentor for all staff throughout the firm.
  • Responsible for proactively organizing and conducting design reviews; seeking out other design resources for input and assistance.  Gathers and considers many points of view, looks for the facts, and seeks ways to incorporate others' ideas into creative solutions.  Collaboration at all levels inside and outside of the firm is greatly valued.
  • Proactively communicates with clients and team members to ensure that design solutions are in alignment with overall project goals, team goals and firm values while limiting unnecessary risk for all.
  • Understands, believes in and is able to confidently promote the value of the firm's philosophy, approach to experience design, and high value services.
  • In addition to engaging others in his/her own project charettes, actively participates in design charettes on other Kahler Slater projects, in the spirit of our collaborative design process.
  • Keeps current on trends in design; keeps current on clients' issues; adds to the firm’s thought leadership initiatives by actively contributing with writing, speaking and/or design research.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Registered Design Professional (as applicable).
  • Minimum ten years of design experience, with a minimum of five years building and maintaining client relationships as senior designer.
  • Excellent design skills.  Must be able to design to meet the client's budget, values and expectations.  Must be flexible and able to leverage design talent to problem solve in different building types and at a variety of budget levels.
  • Displays a passion for artful design, and has, or is working toward, a mastery of one or more of the corporate, retail and/or mixed use market segments, as evidenced by his/her knowledge of design and business trends, business strategy, design issues and challenges in these markets.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively build strong relationships externally and internally; is considered capable of communicating ideas, effectively listening and engaging with client leadership teams.
  • Must be able to appropriately assess and lead the education of clients about the design process, the decision making process and communication protocols for efficient project flow.
  • Requires the ability to use excellent verbal and written communication skills in a proactive manner, with a variety of audiences, at all levels of an organization. 
  • Strong presentation skills are required.
  • Must be able to effectively analyze problems and develop creative solutions, using appropriate resources from inside and outside the firm.
  • Requires abilities to prioritize time in order build and maintain strong and lasting relationships with clients, community and staff, without losing appropriate work/life balance.
  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and other technology-based design tools such as SketchUp, Creative Suite, etc. is highly desirable.  Other forms of design presentation, such as hand rendering skills, are also valued.
  • Able to work independently, yet collaboratively, while demonstrating initiative in work style.
  • Excellent coaching and mentoring skills.  Comfortable providing performance feedback to team members; handling conflict directly and tactfully.
  • Has demonstrated self awareness and is able to self correct when necessary.
