Planning the future of dental education for Indiana

Kahler Slater recently completed the programming and conceptual plan for a new School of Dentistry building at Indiana University in Indianapolis. The School is currently home to 690 students that occupy an original facility built in 1933, plus two large additions constructed in 1962 and a decade later. Dental clinics at the School and in satellite locations serve close to 90,000 appointments annually. The new facility is planned for 525,000 square feet and will include 401 operatories and four floors of research space.

Kahler Slater initiated the project with a visioning session that brought together a diverse group of 50 stakeholders including faculty, students and community members to create a shared project vision and project drivers (a set of design principles). Programming meetings and conceptual designs were completed. A final report with cost estimates was completed in April 2009 and is being used as a foundation for future development on the campus.
