Sustainable design built for corporate growth

United Heartland decided to move to a new space that would better reflect the organization’s brand and reach its goals of growing its work force, creating a new national headquarters experience and attracting and retaining top talent. Kahler Slater, in collaboration with Irgens Development Partners and HLA Business Interiors, created a brand new workplace experience for this industry leader for today and into the future. The new office design creates an environment in which people are truly proud to work, supporting their quest to rank among the best in industry. Subsequently, United Heartland was selected as a Best Place to Work in Insurance for 2010 by Business Insurance magazine.

The new office is located on a challenging, steep sloping site on a bluff that required rezoning. Our team worked with the developer to get the property rezoned and balanced the site to orient the building to minimize site costs, while meeting LEED requirements. The solution includes site orientation that takes advantage of the views provided by the bluff and allows for the building to be seen from great distances.

Kahler Slater led the design and construction teams through the LEED process. We created a cost effective exterior skin while creating large glass openings with exceptional thermal performance that creates a natural light-filled environment with access to views of the surrounding nature for all employees. A raised under floor air distribution system also contributes to the building’s great work place attributes. The project was able to exceed the client’s expectations of LEED certification by reaching LEED Silver certification with minimal impact on the budget, while adhering to a challenging timeline.
