Augusta Health
Heart & Vascular Center

Fishersville, Virginia

Augusta Health partnered with Kahler Slater to design a new Heart & Vascular Center of Excellence to improve cardiovascular care in rural Virginia, serving patients and families close to home. Our Design Team worked to ensure a smooth and successful Certificate of Public Need (COPN) process with the State of Virginia. The new center opened in spring 2013.

The four-story, 85,000 SF addition was designed with input from long-term Augusta Health physician partners, as well as new cardiologists hired to champion the program. The inclusive planning process fostered collaborative relationships that will ensure this new Center of Excellence will attract patients both in and outside their region.

Patients arriving at the dedicated ground floor entry are greeted by gardens, which are also viewed by cardiac rehabilitation patients just inside the new Center. Spreading the wellness message, amenities include a heart healthy café and education center. Non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostics are located on the first floor, vertically connected to second floor physician offices and horizontally adjacent to Imaging. Second Floor houses invasive cardiology, including (2) new catheterization labs, expansion space for future electrophysiology (EP) services, and (8) dedicated prep and recovery rooms, strategically planned for the most safe and efficient patient movement, with horizontal adjacency to surgery, intensive care and surgical nursing units. A dedicated elevator connects first floor Emergency Department to cardiovascular procedure rooms. The Cardiovascular Clinic is also located on this floor, and includes collaborative space for visiting Pulmonologists and other diagnosticians. Third floor shell space is available for future expansion. The project connects on every floor to the existing health campus for provider efficiency, patient convenience and safety.

Additional campus wide renovations include a new dining experience; hyperbaric care; orthopedic care, including joint camp; medical/surgical and pediatric inpatient beds; radiology and patient registration.
