Creating an ideal experience for women and children by consolidating and coordinating care

Columbus, Georgia

Columbus Regional Healthcare System partnered with Kahler Slater to plan and design a new Women and Children's Center at The Medical Center. The plan consolidated two existing, separate programs into one location – creating its own new identity, brand and entry experience. The Center was designed to provide integrated services through all stages of a woman’s life and more comprehensive care for children, with the goal of improving the patient experience, staff efficiency and provider satisfaction. This project was taken through the Design Development phase.

The planning began with multiple special events and presentations to engage various stakeholders and community members. These activities assisted the client as well as the design team to develop community, provider and staff support, and to define a project vision and design drivers which reflected both the client's mission, as well as the community's expectations for the new Center. The planned design for the project included a four-story 75,000 SF addition to The Columbus Regional Medical Center with a new site design experience, café, resource center, gift shop, lactation support, 14 labor and delivery suites, education center and women's procedural prep and recovery rooms. A 105,000 SF renovation plan to The Medical Center included a birthing program comprised of 8 triage assessment rooms, 3 c-section ORs, 14 ante-partum rooms, 44 post-partum rooms, well baby and transitional nurseries. Pediatric services included 7 short stay observation beds, a specialties clinic suite, acute, swing and intensive care beds, and 48 private neonatal intensive care beds. The construction of the first phase of the project, the Children's Emergency and Trauma Center (ETC) entry addition and renovation, was recently completed. This project included a newer, adjacent adult ETC facility on campus, to help create a more supportive environment for children. Columbus Regional additionally sought Kahler Slater's assistance to renovate their existing inpatient facilities. With a limited budget and fast-track schedule, our interior designers worked closely with multiple stakeholders to update existing clinical care spaces throughout the hospital, and later completed a comprehensive interiors master plan that could be implemented system-wide.
