Enhancing learning through state-of-the-art technology and design

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business’ goal was to create an educational setting that would enhance teaching and learning through the integration of state-of-the-art technology and accommodate technological advances in the future.

With numerous classrooms, and large lecture halls to accommodate 350, 250 and 185 students, the building serves the undergraduate business degree programs, the MBA programs and the PhD program at UW-Milwaukee. Additionally, the building is frequently used for outreach activities with alumni and community business leaders through their executive programs. It includes numerous fully networked classrooms, computer labs, a media room with satellite connections and faculty offices including a dean's suite. One special teaching environment is the Collaborative Decision Making Laboratory (COLAB) which has technologies to accommodate group projects, interactive teaching and decision-making. To mimic a corporate environment, this specialty facility is equipped with twenty participant work stations, two computers within the teaching console, two observation rooms, and a host of audio/visual capabilities in order to promote collaboration during decision-making. This room is utilized for classes and also made available to community corporations for facilitated meetings. Future improvements to come include the integration of a coffee house, painting updates and architectural detailing in the common areas, Dean's Suite and Elevators. The project was featured in the annual Advanced Technology Facilities Design magazine published by the American Institute of Architects and received the Excellence in Architectural Technology Award from the State of Wisconsin, Division of State Facilities. Kahler Slater was the architect of record and The Hillier Group was the associate architect.
