Kahler Slater partnered with University of Wisconsin-Parkside on its Student Union Expansion and Admissions Center. In association with WTW Architects, the project included the creation of a new “front door” for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside campus that more effectively engages campus visitors and provides a single point of contact for campus information. It also provides modernized space and expanded capacity for Dining Services operations to accommodate increased traffic and future residence hall expansion.
Additional University functions in the facility include administrative offices for Student Union Operations, meeting rooms and offices for Student Involvement, Student Activities, Multicultural Student Affairs, and a variety of student organizations. The building includes flexible multipurpose event spaces, retail operations including the campus bookstore and credit union, computer lab, related storage, and the Campus Enrollment Management Center. The Cinema Theater, lobby and support spaces were also remodeled and upgraded to serve similar functions. The resulting design of the project provides a warm, inviting atmosphere which incorporates the latest technology to enhance connectivity and communications. To improve dining facilities, the design centered on increasing choices, functionality and flexibility by increasing space and creating an open, welcoming space. Key building improvements were required including infrastructure, technology and wayfinding. Most importantly, Kahler Slater achieved a contextual design and integration with the master plan, which was the main goal of the client.
