Hotel Phillips

Restoration of an art deco landmark with a hip atmosphere and rich tradition of excellence.

The 20-story Hotel Phillips, listed on the Register of Local and National Historic Places, was Kansas City’s tallest hotel when it originally opened in 1931. Under the new ownership of Marcus Hotels and Resorts, this landmark building underwent a major renovation to become one of the leading downtown hotels and received a AAA Four-Diamond rating.

Masterful renovations have retained the original glamour while adding every contemporary convenience a business or leisure traveler desires. The result is an alluring hotel that feels grand, yet intimate at the same time and hip but never stuffy.

Kahler Slater was engaged to perform a design feasibility study during the acquisition period and be the architect for the entire project. The design included creating more luxurious and spacious guestrooms and bathrooms, restoring the historic lobby and other public spaces, upgrading mechanical and electrical systems and making the building accessible. Also included in the work were repairs to insure the integrity of the brick and terra cotta façades of the building and historic window restoration. Now complete, the 217-room Hotel Phillips once again caters to the needs of modern guests while maintaining its historic charm and grandeur.
