The Osthoff Resort, built along Elkhart Lake, on the former site of a grand Victorian resort, found rapid success upon its opening in 1996. In 2003, it was decided that a new wing, which could accommodate a spa, ballroom, restaurant and additional guest rooms and suites, would allow the resort to provide guests with AAA Four Diamond Experience. This addition would raise the quality of the entire complex, enhance the potential of its non-guestroom revenue drivers (the spa, ballroom, restaurant), and boost both occupancy and room rates.
Elkhart Lake is the main reference point for the addition and improvements made throughout the property. As a result, the restaurant overlooks the lake and the new meeting spaces are situated on a lakeside promenade. Perhaps the most impressive of all is Aspira, the new spa, with expansive windows that provide soothing views of the water. The spa design is in a series of concentric circles, much like the ripples that occur when a stone drops into the water. Even the treatments themselves refer to water and its many rituals and traditions. In addition to planning and designing the new wing, Kahler Slater’s hospitality experts consulted with Osthoff Resort to establish the business model that would produce optimum revenue from the space. Factoring in the economics of the new wing, how many rooms and suites would offer lake views (even eliminating some rooms to create a much-needed service passageway), Osthoff leaders quickly agreed to build a four-story wing, instead of the originally planned three-story addition. That one decision made the key difference in helping them achieve and successfully maintain their business objectives—to offer guests an unforgettable experience while maintaining a profitable bottom line.
