Delivering a home court advantage for a winning team

Green Bay, Wisconsin

The Kress Events Center at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay represents the realization of multiple dreams. Designed through a collaborative process that included athletics administration, students, faculty, staff and community members, the Kress Events Center is a stunning campus landmark and the venue of choice for all large campus events. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay commissioned Kahler Slater as the athletic facilities expert to work with Moody Nolan to design this state-of-the-art building.

More than just a state-of-the-art athletic and recreation center, the Kress Events Center also hosts as concerts and convocations which, up until its opening, were hosted in facilities off campus. As a symbol of the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability, it meets LEED silver certification standards. The facility features a fully equipped fitness and wellness area. It contains a turf gym for year-round soccer practice and multiple volleyball and basketball courts. Most importantly, however, it is the home court for the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay’s championship women’s basketball and volleyball teams. A key element of Kahler Slater’s design is a feeling of openness. A two-story glass wall on the building’s north end creates a mezzanine on which the fitness center is located. Besides views of the main basketball court, visitors also enjoy views looking out onto some of the campus’s most beautiful landscape. That open feeling, however, gives way to an intimate feeling on the basketball court. The 4,000 stadium seats bring the fans as close as possible to the action. The barrel-vaulted ceilings echo and amplify the noise, heightening the excitement courtside and creating a distinct home court advantage for the Phoenixes. Their women’s basketball team won 27 consecutive games the first season they played at the Kress Events Center (including post-season play), tying the school record for the longest home court winning streak.
