University of Wisconsin-Madison – Recreation Master Plan

Providing a strategic plan for future recreation needs

Madison, Wisconsin

This master plan study concentrated on the already identified 270,000 SF deficit in recreation space on the University of Wisconsin campus. Kahler Slater, teamed with Hastings & Chivetta, assessed their existing Southeast Recreational Facility (SERF) and Natatorium (NAT) facilities and made recommendations for demolition/expansion.

The study recommended the demolition of the 1963 NAT and proposed a new 215,000 SF addition to be connected to the existing Unit II gymnasium. As part of this project, 70,000 SF will be dedicated for a new athletic competition indoor 50-meter pool/diving facility.

The addition of a new campus pedestrian mall prompted the relocation of the main entrance and subsequently, a new vertical circulation hub for the entire facility.

A “restacking” of programmatic spaces will improve the overall usefulness for students and operational efficiency for staff while adding more than 23,000 SF of additional fitness center space, four additional basketball courts, a 25,000 SF indoor multi-purpose turf space, a 6-lane lap pool, a warm water instructional pool and whirlpool, an expanded administrative suite and a new entrance lobby.

The deliverables included conceptual designs and estimates that were used for a student referendum in 2010.
