SSM St. Clare Hospital has a long-standing relationship with Kahler Slater beginning with a 1991 master plan. Most recent design efforts master planned the expansion and consolidation of the birth center, medical/surgical and ICU beds renovation along with ambulatory renovations including rehabilitation services and radiation oncology.
Lean Process Improvement strategies used by the Kahler Slater design team allow for increased workflow efficiencies, improved patient interactions, supply/medication distribution and environmental services efficiencies. Location of charting alcoves and nurse servers near the patient room allow staff the ability to monitor the patient more closely and maintain a high level of safety and observation for the patient. An additional Kahler Slater led Lean initiative successfully implemented bedside reporting at shift change, which resulted in reduced staff overtime while increasing patient satisfaction.
Inspiration from the hospital’s healing garden and nearby natural surroundings provide a visual retreat for the revitalization of mind, body and spirit for both patients and staff. Organic elements are found intertwined within the flooring, fabrics and artwork within the patient spaces to create visual interest and become a part of the healing process. The floor patterns are not only visually appealing, but also help measure walking milestones for patients during their recovery. Earth tone colors support a warm, calming design.
