Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital
Surgery Expansion & Renovation

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Kahler Slater is currently partnering with Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to renovate an existing inpatient wing into a new consolidated Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The project will consolidate two Med/Surg ICUs with the CSICU, all of which are located on separate floors of the existing facility. The existing Med/Surg ICU bedrooms are small and do not support contemporary ICU care; and the existing CSICU consists of open bays that afford little patient privacy and limit family participation.

The ICU bedrooms, including Cardiovascular ICU rooms, are designed as Acuity-adaptable rooms, each with a toilet room with shower, to allow a wide range of care that can be individually tailored to the patients’ needs. All patient rooms will also have ceiling-mounted patient lifts for patient and staff safety, as well as family space to allow overnight stays. A dedicated patient elevator is planned to ensure immediate access to and from Surgery and the Emergency Department on the floor below. A new public elevator will bring families to a family hub at the secure entry to the unit. Additionally, centralized support spaces for all patient care needs and patient charting computers at the patient rooms minimize the footsteps for nurses, allowing more time for direct patient care.
