Kahler Slater, a global, award-winning architecture, interior design and environmental branding firm, is pleased to welcome Manuel Hernandez, MD, MBA, FACEP, CPE, to the firm as Principal, Strategic Innovation/Co-Practice Leader - Healthcare Team.
Focused on transforming healthcare by leveraging the power of design methodologies to explore systems and processes from clinical, operational, experiential, technological and physical perspectives, Dr. Hernandez has struck a unique professional balance as a practicing physician, dynamic healthcare executive and design professional. He was honored by Healthcare Design Magazine in 2017 as one of their annual ten most influential people advancing healthcare design and, as a practicing physician, has been recognized for patient satisfaction scores that exceed the 99th percentile.

Dr. Hernandez is one of the very few healthcare designers who remains clinically active, providing him with unparalleled insights and empathy regarding the challenges facing healthcare, patients and providers. He is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Penn State Health / Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and an attending physician at the University of Florida Health in Jacksonville. Prior to joining Kahler Slater, he was a health market and former advisory services leader with CannonDesign, where he provided insight on healthcare strategy, operations, consumer experiences and facility solutions, co-creating innovative solutions for clients around the globe.
“In this tumultuous changing healthcare landscape, we know we need to bring our clients a performance-based design process, knowledge of future technologies, innovative care models, and the latest thinking about efficient work flows,” said Kahler Slater Vice President, Al Krueger, who shares team leadership responsibilities with Dr. Hernandez. “As co-practice leaders of our health care team, Manny and I will ensure that we are helping our clients design for the future, bringing them exciting new ideas and developing cost effective, new models of care.”
Dr. Hernandez is a regular contributor to healthcare industry publications advancing performance, innovation and design. He has presented nationally and internationally on how to leverage design methodologies to transform clinical environments and he consults with healthcare organizations around the globe.

Dr. Hernandez received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Irvine. In 2018, Dr. Hernandez will receive his Master of Science Degree in Strategic Management and Design from Parsons School of Design in New York City. He is a lifelong learner, having additional credentials that include a certificate in Corporate Innovation and Disruption from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Rhetoric and Communication from Temple University.
