Leaders at Sauk Prairie Hospital recognized they were out of room to grow on their landlocked campus in the heart of downtown Prairie du Sac, WI. A decision was made to relocate to a site that allowed the independent hospital more opportunity for future expansion and flexibility to help serve the more than 17 growing regional communities in the area.
The design team partnered with Sauk Prairie Healthcare to master plan and design a replacement campus three miles from their current location, which included a 151,990 square foot, 36-bed community hospital and attached 58,000 square foot medical office building, which shares a common entrance with the hospital. The hospital includes a full service clinical laboratory, emergency department, and two key service lines, orthopedic and women's services, as Centers of Excellence on the campus. The outpatient facility is home to ambulatory services supported by the hospital, including: Women's Health, Orthopedics, Cardiac Rehab, Pulmonary Rehab, Audiology and a Sleep Center.
Kahler Slater incorporated principles of evidence-based and sustainable design, ensuring patient privacy and dignity, supporting physical wellness and spiritual well-being. Most importantly, Sauk Prairie wanted to personalize the patient, family, physician and staff experience in ways that attract the best talent, promote healing, are dignified, and reflect the uniqueness of their community.
Extensive community listening sessions conducted early in the project were key to securing community support for this project. Kahler Slater worked closely with the community to understand concerns about the departure to a greenfield site and the challenging project budget. The Kahler Slater team brainstormed creative ways to achieve a partial reuse of the original hospital site, including leaving administrative services, outpatient clinics and the wellness center at the existing facility.
