Sentara RMH Healthcare engaged Kahler Slater to master plan their new replacement hospital campus and design their first ambulatory facility following the master plan guidelines. Kahler Slater planned and designed the new 16,000 SF multi-specialty program for midlife women, the recently completed Funkhouser Women’s Center. Kahler Slater began by listening to the voice of the customer, through our facilitation of a series of focus groups with women of the community.
This early effort identified a need for more comprehensive women's care and "a place for women to come together," promoting healthy lifestyles and offering support to women of all ages. The new Women's Center houses care navigation for comprehensive women's midlife ambulatory services, including mammography, ultrasound, stereotactic biopsy, breast surgery, consult and exam space for additional multi-specialty providers, and counseling services such as behavioral health and diabetic education.
In direct response to the focus group findings, the Education Center was developed to help achieve the Women's Center community goal of sharing information in a place designed just for them. The Education Center and adjoining outdoor terrace supports multi-lingual chronic disease self-management groups, cancer survivor yoga and a diverse offering of women's health education series classes. Additionally, Image Recovery and retail services, previously located off campus, complete the comprehensive offerings of the Women's Center.
Across the street from the previously existing RMH Cancer Center and hospital, the Women's Center is designed to complement the existing campus, featuring a sloped roof glass entry pavilion - highlighting the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain setting. Kahler Slater additionally provided philanthropy support and donor engagement services for this project.
