SSM Health Monroe Hospital’s Family Birth Suites supports SSM’s healing mission through access to nature, natural light, serene views, sustainable design, and commitment to safety. The roof-top gardens and abundance of light throughout the facility are proven to aid in recovery and help patients get home sooner. The Birth Center includes a C-Section suite within the nursing unit, seven Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum rooms (LDRP) suites with whirlpool tubs and sleeping areas for family. Adjacent Postpartum bedrooms also accommodate female surgical patients. While embedding all needed clinical and communication technology, the design of the Birthing Suites additionally provides comfortable family amenities, natural light, and views, as well as easy connections to the other hospital services. Lean process improvement studies and evidence-based design principles, such as same-handed design, laid the foundation for creating a safe, efficient, and healing environment. Design inspiration for this project was found in the Swiss heritage and rolling green rural landscape of the region and embedded in design details throughout.
