In 2006, the University of Wisconsin-Madison identified a deficit in their recreation program space. Recognizing rec programs are a vital component to providing a vibrant and healthy campus, university leaders determined they should think strategically about the future rather than proceed into a series of small projects to address immediate needs. Thus began the journey that included multiple facility design studies followed by a comprehensive recreation master plan to prepare a roadmap for the future.
In a growingly competitive higher education landscape, UW-Madison’s 15-year strategic planning journey offers insights to any size campus. From piecemeal plans to strategic thinking and renovations to new construction, revitalizing a campus recreation experience can take different forms and paths. However, UW-Madison’s journey reveals that no matter the size and scope of the endeavor, engagement is the key to success.
This paper explores how to support decision-making and how to leverage recreation to support the entire campus’ goals for student enrollment and engagement. We share details from each milestone as well as questions and tips to provide guidance as you begin to navigate your journey.
