Advancing Environmental Stewardship Through Integrated Healthcare Design
Sustainable healthcare environments require more than efficient systems or isolated green features. They demand an integrated approach that considers site, building performance, materials, and long-term community impact as a unified whole. At the SSM Health Sun Prairie Outpatient Center, climate responsibility served as a shared design objective across disciplines, aligning environmental performance with human experience.
A defining feature of the project is its solar carport, which combines renewable energy generation with a welcoming arrival experience. Housing more than 1,900 photovoltaic panels, the structure was projected to offset nearly half of the building's annual electricity demand while providing covered parking, shaded pedestrian access, and onsite EV charging. Results from 8 months into occupancy show the solar array offset 58% of electrical load in April and 90% in May. By pairing clean energy production with everyday convenience, the design makes sustainability both visible and functional.
Energy efficiency extends throughout the facility. High-performance building systems, strategic lighting design, and daylight-responsive controls were carefully coordinated to exceed energy code requirements while maintaining comfort and visual quality. Interior and exterior lighting systems outperform baseline energy standards, contributing to meaningful energy-cost savings without compromising the patient experience, an essential consideration in healthcare environments.
The site itself functions as a regenerative landscape. Mature trees were preserved as defining elements of the campus, maintaining a strong connection to place while providing shade, habitat, and intuitive wayfinding. Wood from select removed trees was repurposed into a visitor bench, extending the landscape story into the building and creating a meaningful place of respite. Native plantings support biodiversity, attract pollinators, and improve stormwater infiltration, helping reduce runoff and protect water quality as the surrounding community continues to grow.
Creating healthier places means intentionally designing environments that support physical and mental well-being. As The Center for Health Design observes, “natural light should be incorporated into lighting design in healthcare settings, not only because it is beneficial to patients and staff, but also because it is light delivered at no cost and in a form that most people prefer.” This highlights how a single sustainable design strategy can simultaneously advance occupant health, user experience, and environmental performance.

Outdoor walking paths and a dedicated respite garden further extend sustainability beyond building performance metrics, offering opportunities for movement, restoration, and connection to nature.
Multimodal transportation options, EV infrastructure, and accessible pedestrian routes support inclusive, low-carbon mobility throughout the site.
Material selections were guided by durability, transparency, and lifecycle performance, supporting long-term adaptability while reducing environmental impact. Together, these strategies demonstrate how sustainability can be woven seamlessly across systems, scales, and user experiences.
The EPA notes that Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors and that indoor pollutants can contribute to respiratory disease, heart disease, cancer, headaches, fatigue, and other health impacts. Improved ventilation, source control, and filtration are recognized strategies for healthier buildings.
The SSM Health Sun Prairie Outpatient Center illustrates how climate-responsive design, grounded in collaboration and intentional decision-making, can create healthcare environments that support both planetary health and community wellbeing. By integrating renewable energy, regenerative landscapes, efficient building systems, and thoughtful material stewardship, the project demonstrates how healthcare facilities can reduce environmental impact while enhancing the patient and caregiver experience. These strategies reflect a broader commitment to long-term stewardship, illustrating how design can support healthier outcomes for people, communities, and the environment alike.
