With deep respect and gratitude, we remember David Kahler, FAIA, a visionary architect, devoted mentor, and dedicated leader whose influence continues to shape Kahler Slater and the design profession.
From his first days with our firm in 1965, he championed architecture as an act of service, believing that thoughtful design has the power to elevate communities, foster connection, and enrich lives. From 1974 to 2002, he led the firm with Mac Slater and helped shape Kahler Slater into a nationally respected practice while contributing to some of the region’s most enduring civic and cultural architecture. His commitment to design excellence was matched by a strong commitment to integrity, curiosity, and collaboration.
As an architect, David set a standard that blended rigor with imagination. He demanded clarity of thought, respect for context, and honesty in materials, all while encouraging bold ideas and questioning convention. Among his earliest and most influential works was the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (1967), a project that created a campus landmark that continues to serve generations of students. He led the 11‑year, phased restoration of the Wisconsin State Capitol (1991–2002), a highly complex and highly visible effort that required technical mastery and deep stewardship of a civic landmark.

As a leader and mentor, David’s legacy is especially enduring. He invested generously in people, empowering generations of architects to find their voices, trust their instincts, and grow into principled professionals. Many who worked alongside him credit David not only with shaping their careers, but with shaping how they think, listen, and lead.
David’s recognition as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects reflected the esteem of the profession, but those who knew him best will remember his humility, wit, and unwavering belief in the collective strength of a team. He led with quiet confidence and an open door, always urging us to do better work for our clients, for our communities, and for one another.

While we mourn his passing, we celebrate a legacy that lives on in the firm he helped build, the places he helped shape, and the people he inspired. His principles remain embedded in our culture and our work, guiding us forward.
We are profoundly grateful for David’s life, leadership, and vision. He will be missed dearly and remembered always.
