Kahler Slater Welcomes UW-Milwaukee SARUP Students

March 14, 2016

Kahler Slater welcomes two SARUP Externs this week, March 14th-18th, 2016. We are excited to host externs with a diverse spectrum of college and life experiences. Their time with us will include a range of site visits and consultant coordination meetings, punchlisting in Huntley, Illinois and spending a day in our Madison office. We look forward to sharing our multi-faceted profession of architecture. We have hosted externs for several years and try to provide an enriching experience year after year. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates throughout the week.

Here’s a snippet from SARUP’s online description:

SARUP Externship Program:

The SARUP externship program offers undergraduate and graduate students exposure to professional experiences in architecture and planning. Participating students spend one week in an office or related professional organization. Depending upon the individual’s level of experience and the firm needs, an extern’s duties can include:

  • Job shadowing
  • Building physical models
  • Helping prepare competition boards and renderings
  • Listening in on city planning or client meetings
  • Attending site visits

Any activity that can help provide exposure to the student is considered valuable extern experience. Typically, there are one to two externs assigned to a firm, depending on the size of the firm. These externships provide basic insight into architectural practice and networking. Sponsoring firms benefit from the introduction to capable and motivated students and the skills and fresh ideas they bring. Many sponsors view the extern experience as a mentoring opportunity.
