Carle Health
Richland Memorial Hospital & Ambulatory Care Clinic

Olney, Illinois

Carle Health partnered with Kahler Slater to transform the Richland Memorial Hospital campus, expanding access to high-quality healthcare and strengthening community wellness throughout southeastern Illinois. The campus modernization includes an expanded emergency department within the existing hospital, and a new, 46,335-square-foot, two-story ambulatory care clinic designed to introduce advanced services, enhance patient experience, and support evolving healthcare needs throughout the region.

The ambulatory care clinic will provide expanded specialty care services including infusion therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, enhanced laboratory services, and a variety of exam and procedure spaces that support multidisciplinary care. Guided by a patient- and staff-centered design approach, the facility prioritizes natural daylight, acoustic comfort, intuitive wayfinding, and wellness-focused environments that promote healing, comfort, and efficiency.

Targeting WELL Certification, the project integrates sustainable and resilient design strategies that support both human and environmental health. Solar energy systems, high-efficiency lighting and mechanical systems, and thoughtfully designed native landscapes contribute to reduced environmental impact while creating restorative experiences for patients, visitors, and staff alike.

A climate-controlled connector links the new clinic to the existing hospital, strengthening operational efficiencies and creating a seamless arrival experience for the expanded emergency department. The surrounding landscape extends the healing environment beyond the building through native plant communities, pollinator-friendly species, and outdoor spaces that foster connections to nature, support biodiversity, and provide opportunities for respite and reflection.

In addition to architecture and planning services, Kahler Slater is providing environmental branding and a comprehensive campus wayfinding strategy to create a cohesive, easy-to-navigate, and welcoming experience across the campus.

Designed by Kahler Slater and constructed by PARIC, the project is expected to open in late 2027, expanding access to world-class healthcare and strengthening community wellness across southeastern Illinois.
