As the first major renovation within the Northwestern Medicine hospital system, the Surgery Center at Kishwaukee Hospital was thoughtfully designed to reflect the Northwestern Medicine brand and strengthen its connection to the community, anticipating increased patient and guest volume.

The reimagined space welcomes guests with a warm, human-scaled reception area featuring layered lighting, natural textures, and refined materials. Enhancements to the prep, recovery, PACU, and OR spaces demonstrate Northwestern Medicine’s commitment to delivering advanced, high-quality care in a calming, patient-centered environment.

The renovation was completed in four carefully phased stages within the existing department, allowing the project team to expedite the timeline through strategic use of overtime hours with minimal disruption to ongoing care. Staff spaces were elevated with custom millwork, high-end finishes, and comfortable furnishings to support a positive working environment. From thoughtful spatial planning to durable, cleanable materials, every detail reinforces the organization’s mission to elevate care and create a healing environment that supports both patients and providers.
