Long on quality, but short on infrastructure, Sauk Prairie Healthcare was faced with a common occurrence in community healthcare today: An aging campus out of space to grow.
Kahler Slater partnered with Sauk Prairie Hospital to master plan and design their new 152,000-square-foot replacement hospital and 58,000-square-foot, attached medical office building on a new campus. Extensive community listening sessions conducted early in the project were key to securing community support for this project. Kahler Slater worked closely with the community to understand concerns about the departure to a greenfield site and the challenging project budget.
In their design for a replacement health care campus, Kahler Slater incorporated principles of evidence-based and sustainable design, ensuring the new campus could adapt to ever-changing needs and the latest technologies. Opportunities for expansion, both incremental and wholesale, were central to the design concept and campus plan. Operationally, the formation of a new Patient Services Center brought a streamlined entry process front and center in the new facility, and created staff efficiency.
By celebrating the local ethnography as the design inspiration, including features like the natural materials and strong horizontals reminiscent of the Prairie Style, nods to the block-and-stack building method, and pops of “barn red” on the exterior, the hospital becomes more firmly rooted in the community that it serves.
