Leveraging Wellness and Athletics for Growth

Cornell College
Athletic and Wellness Center

Mount Vernon, Iowa

With a mission to better serve their students’ health and wellness needs, Cornell College engaged Kahler Slater and Mortenson Construction to design an updated home for their athletic and wellness programs. College leadership immediately understood their renovation and expansion project will directly support Cornell’s ability to recruit new students, enhance Rams Athletics programs, secure competitive events, and provide a positive impact on every student and student-athlete, now and for future generations.

Located just off of the new entry, a two level Health and Wellness Center creates a vibrant hub for campus life and fosters a sense of community. The addition/renovation includes an expanded lobby space that functions as a gathering space before and after events in the renovated gymnasium and fieldhouse on event days, and as a vibrant student lounge on all other days. In addition, the design provides Cornell with ample team meeting space, group exercise studios, a full athletic office suite, and a new athletic training suite. Updated locker rooms serve student-athletes, visiting teams, and the entire Cornell community.

The design includes bold and strategic use of environmental branding to convey the Cornell legacy. By strategically designing a band of the College's signature purple that reaches floor to ceiling and then extends across the facility using acoustic panels, the design not only reinforces the Cornell brand, it assists with wayfinding and ties the entire facility together.

Powerful Results

“The best part of the new facility is the flexibility we have to serve the entire campus community. Our athletes are certainly excited about this, and everyone who walks into the door can’t believe how nice it is, how big it is, how many different spaces we have, and it’s going to benefit not just Cornell athletics but the campus in general.”
