Centra Lynchburg General Hospital Celebrates Groundbreaking on Six-story Tower

September 20, 2025

Centra Health recently celebrated the groundbreaking of Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s new state-of-the-art care tower, a major milestone in Centra’s Modernization Plan and an important investment in the future of healthcare in Virginia.

Designed by Kahler Slater, the six-story, 266,200 SF tower will, in the words of Centra President and CEO Richard Tugman, “ensure that people across central and southern Virginia have access to the safest, highest quality care close to home.”

The new facility will include a reimagined emergency department with a split flow care model and integrated psychiatric care space, an advanced surgical suite with twelve modern operating rooms, and a new labor and delivery unit featuring an intensive care nursery.

Centra’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in the tower’s future-focused design, which incorporates geothermal technology, a green roof, and energy efficient systems projected to reduce energy use by forty percent. It is currently the largest healthcare project in Virginia designed to use geothermal energy.

Construction is being led by Whiting-Turner and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2028.

We are honored to help bring this vision to life and proud to support Centra’s mission to improve the health and quality of life for the communities it serves.
