Featured in Neonatology Today: Once Upon a Design: HSHS St. John’s NICU Design and Post Occupancy Findings

The trend in NICU design toward exclusively private single-family rooms is widely embraced and implemented for good reasons: supporting family-centered care models, standarding operations, improving infection control, and providing equitable accommodations for all families.  

While private rooms remain an important component of NICU design, evolving research is prompting healthcare systems to reexamine how different care environments support patient outcomes, family experience, and staff workflows.  As a result, organizations are exploring how a combination of room types can better address diverse needs.  

This article in Neonatology Today examines findings from a post-occupancy evaluation at the HSHS St. John’s Level III NICU redesign, demonstrating the ways in which mixed room types has increased their ability to support diverse needs while maintaining high satisfaction scores from families and staff alike.
