Ripon College commemorated the opening of the Franzen Science Center with a grand opening ceremony. The 68,500 square foot three-story expansion and renovation was designed by Kahler Slater to support STEM-related curricula on campus. The new Franzen Science Center provides a more advanced and contemporary learning environment to serve current students and attract future students.
The project was the first major renovation to the 1960’s facility in over 30 years. The design showcases new state-of-the-art laboratories, enhanced active learning classrooms, and collaboration and gathering spaces. Labs offer students hands-on experience designing studies, using equipment, and analyzing data. A glass lobby and sky deck bring increased light into the teaching spaces and reflect the college’s mission to prepare students for their careers as well as being productive, socially responsible citizens. The design includes environmental branding, placemaking, and storytelling elements throughout to create memorable touchpoints and experiences and reinforce the College’s commitment to prioritize the student experience.
Named after Ripon College alumni Mark and Janice Franzen, the Franzen Science Center project is part of a $35 million strategic infrastructure plan for the College. Kahler Slater partnered with Boldt Construction to deliver the facility.
